Nate continues to thrive

Less than a year after representing The Hearing House at the Power of Speech event in Canberra, 14-year-old Nate Liefting is proving that confidence, determination and the right support can open doors in every aspect of life.
Now in Year 9 at Pukekohe High School, Nate has made a strong start to secondary school life. His transition has been marked not only by academic success, but by growing independence and self-confidence—qualities that have flourished since receiving his bilateral cochlear implants last May and sharing his story on the international stage at Power of Speech.
According to his mother, Michelle, Nate has settled into high school exceptionally well.
“His teachers have praised his diligence, preparedness, and that he always asks clarifying questions, advocates for himself and assists others,” she says.
Michelle says one technology upgrade has made a significant difference this year—the ability to control his Roger microphone directly from his phone, making it easier for him to manage listening situations independently throughout the school day.
Nate has always loved learning, particularly maths, and that enthusiasm continues. Last year, he competed at the annual schools’ Mathex competition, and he is trying out for his high school team this year.
Outside the classroom, Nate still enjoys spending time playing Minecraft and Mario Kart, but his interest has expanded into coding and digital technologies, reflecting his growing interest in how technology works.
For Nate and his family, one of the highlights of the past year was travelling to Canberra to represent The Hearing House at First Voice's annual Power of Speech event.
Standing before policymakers, health professionals and families from across Australia and New Zealand, Nate shared his hearing journey and how cochlear implants had transformed his ability to communicate.
Although public speaking didn't come naturally, Michelle says the experience has had a lasting impact on Nate.
"He thoroughly enjoyed the experience and only wishes he could have stayed longer," she says.
"Public speaking still isn't his favourite thing, but we certainly saw a massive improvement in his self-confidence."
Nate’s journey also highlights the importance of ongoing support beyond cochlear implantation. The combination of advanced hearing technology, specialist care and opportunities for engagement such as Power of Speech, have helped Nate build strong communication skills, and also the confidence to participate fully at school and in his community.
This year’s Power of Speech event will be held on Tuesday, 13 October in Canberra.
