Staying connected and confident with your cochlear implant doesn’t have to be complicated – we’re here to help.
We’ve put together 12 practical tips to support you in everyday life, including how to:
✅ Keep your cochlear implant equipment in great condition
✅ Troubleshoot common issues at home
✅ Know what to do (and who to contact) if you need support
From caring for your equipment to managing communication in busy or noisy environments, these tips are designed to make life a little easier.

📅 Day 12: What do I do if ... I’m struggling to hear in a noisy place like a holiday party or restaurant?
Tips: ✅ Move to a quieter area — away from speakers or busy spots. ✅ Ask to turn down background noise like music or TV. ✅ Face the person you’re speaking to for visual cues. ✅ Choose quieter seating — corners or booths work best. ✅ Use your accessories like a Mini Microphone. ✅ Advocate for yourself — it’s okay to ask for a quieter space. 📅 Day 11: What do I do if … I’m feeling overwhelmed?
Tip: ✅Email familysupport@hearinghouse.co.nz for an appointment with our counsellor Hazel in the new year. 📅 Day 10: What do I do if … I’m having severe pain, see discharge or am worried about an infection?
Tip: ✅Don’t delay. See your GP or go straight to A&E. Let them know you have a cochlear implant and let them examine the site ✅ Email adultci@hearinghouse.co.nz after you have seen the doctor to let us know the outcome, and we can book a follow up appointment with you See you tomorrow for Day 11 of our CI tips! 💚


📅 Day 9: What do I do if ... I’m in a noisy place and it’s hard to hear?
Tip: ✅ Use the ForwardFocus feature in the Smart App if available. ✅Switch to a noise program if one is set up. ✅ Adjust volume if needed. See you tomorrow for Day 10 of our CI tips! 💚


📅 Day 8: What do I do if ... I’m not sure what program I’m on or if I need more volume?
Tip: ✅ Open the Nucleus Smart App or use your remote to check your current program. You can switch between programs and volume there as well. See you tomorrow for Day 9 of our CI tips! 💚


📅 Day 7: What do I do if ... the coil keeps falling off?
Tip: ✅Use a retention option like a SnugFit. ✅Secure it with a headband, cap or clips. ✅ You might need a stronger magnet - make an appointment at The Hearing House to see if this is an option. See you tomorrow for Day 8 of our CI tips! 💚


📅 Day 6: What do I do if ... I hear beeps or tones I don’t recognise?
Tip: ✅ Those may be low battery alerts, program changes, or coil-off alerts. ✅Use the Smart App or remote to check the process or status and notifications. ✅Go into “notifications” through settings on your phone and disable notifications. See you tomorrow for Day 7 of our CI tips! 💚


📅 Day 5: What do I do if ... my processor won’t turn on?

📅 Day 4: What do I do if ... my phone isn't streaming sound to my processor?
Tip: ✅ Use speakerphone as a quick alternative. 📅 Day 3: What do I do if ... my battery doesn’t seem to last long
Tip: ✅ Use the Nucleus Smart App or your remote control to check battery levels. ✅ Swap to a fully charged one if needed. ✅ Use the disposable batteries in your pack and make an appointment at The Hearing House to discuss your batteries. 📅 Day 2: What do I do if ... I can’t hear anything from my processor?
