For more than three years, Deaf Aotearoa has been running First Signs playgroups and whānau events at The Hearing House, providing opportunities for Deaf and hard of hearing tamariki and their whānau to learn, play and connect.

Their popular Sign Play Together playgroups have run continuously since May 2023, offering unique teaching and learning opportunities for pre-school children and their whānau. All activities and teaching are conducted in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).

The playgroups offer a unique opportunity for families to connect, have fun, and support their child’s language development through play. The monthly groups are led by Deaf Aotearoa’s Child and Youth team.

“The Auckland-based First Signs playgroup provides a welcoming space where Deaf children can interact with other children using visual language,” says Natasha Cloete, Child and Youth manager at Deaf Aotearoa. “Through NZSL, children can see language everywhere around them, creating rich opportunities for communication and learning. Early access to both NZSL and spoken language supports language development and helps reduce the risk of language deprivation.”

Dr Claire Green, Chief Executive of The Hearing House, says the playgroups are a wonderful example of what can be achieved through strong relationships and working together.

“Deaf Aotearoa brings the knowledge, experience and expertise, and we are delighted to be able to provide a space where children and whānau can come together, learn and connect.

“For us, this partnership has also been an important part of our own learning and understanding of NZSL and Deaf culture. We have learned so much from Deaf Aotearoa over the years, and it is wonderful to see the connections being made between children, families and the Deaf community.”

The next playgroup is on Saturday, 7 November. If you are interested, please contact firstsigns@deaf.org.nz
