Hazel’s journey: Discovering a whole new world at 84

Hearing House Client, Hazel Wood

At 84 years old, Hazel Wood had been living with hearing difficulties for many years.

Audiologists had supported her throughout that time, adjusting her hearing aids as her hearing changed. She had always appreciated their care and expertise.

At her annual check-up in 2024, Hazel passed the standard hearing test. But when asked to face the wall and repeat sentences, she found it impossible.

“I hadn’t realised how much I was relying on lip reading,” Hazel shared.

When hearing aids were no longer effective, she was referred to us at The Hearing House to explore cochlear implant options.

Hazel hadn’t heard of a cochlear implant before, but our team explained the process clearly — from the assessment criteria to the potential benefits.

With everything in place, she went ahead with surgery, and her switch-on went smoothly. Since then, Hazel has been adjusting to this new way of hearing, supported by online rehabilitation exercises — and she’s overjoyed by the difference it has made.

“I can fully participate in conversations with family and friends, at home and while driving. I can enjoy some television without subtitles and, oh joy, even at the cinema,” she said.

Hazel told us that she’s incredibly thankful to have had the opportunity to be part of the cochlear implant programme — a life-changing step that’s reconnected her with the world around her.

“I am unable to put into words just how thankful I am to have had the chance to participate in the cochlear implant programme. It’s just great.”
