Whakairo Māori Carving Unveiled at Auckland Deaf Society

On Saturday, 20 September, during Māori Language Week, the Auckland Deaf Society unveiled its first ever Whakairo Māori Carving (Pare) in a moving dawn ceremony.

Our colleague Natasha Cloete from Deaf Aotearoa had the privilege of attending this historic occasion, joined by our CEO Claire Green, First Signs facilitator Maryanne Hay, and one of our kiritaki (clients), Kathleen. Together, they experienced the powerful dawn blessing as the sun rose and birds flew overhead. The moment was marked by stirring speeches, waiata, and haka – all led by Māori Turi.

The carving itself was created by Māori Turi, and its unveiling brought the community together in celebration of culture, identity, and history. Natasha shared that it was deeply moving to see the leadership of Deaf Māori and to connect more closely with the community.

It was a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and leadership within our Deaf community.
