As part of NZSL Week 2025, The Hearing House is proudly celebrating the beauty and importance of New Zealand Sign Language — one of our country’s official languages. This week will be filled with meaningful learning, powerful conversations, and a collective commitment to breaking down communication barriers.
Learning Together Through Sign Language
Our team has been participating in NZSL classes led by the wonderful Natasha and Kelly from Deaf Aotearoa. These hands-on sessions have helped us learn how to introduce ourselves, describe our job roles, express emotions, understand fingerspelling, and so much more. It's been a rewarding experience that has brought our team closer while deepening our connection with the Deaf community.

National Celebrations in Wellington
To mark NZSL Week on a national level, our CEO, Dr Claire Green, travelled to Wellington to take part in celebrations highlighting the richness of NZSL and the diverse culture it represents. These events serve to dismantle barriers, dispel misconceptions, and promote inclusion.
In a special moment captured during the celebrations, Claire joined NZSL Ambassador Rosie Solouota, Whaikaha kaimahi Kellye Bensley and Ryan Simchowitz, and Neil Heslop, CEO of SCIP, to affirm our shared goal — supporting an Aotearoa where anyone can sign anywhere.

Our Commitment
At The Hearing House, we believe in the power of communication and inclusion. This NZSL Week has reminded us how valuable it is to create spaces where everyone feels heard, seen, and respected. We’re committed to continuing our journey with NZSL — not just this week, but all year round.
