Family Support
From diagnosis through
transitioning to school, the journey at The Hearing House can be very stressful for the whole family. Not only can it be emotionally straining for parents when they find out their child has a hearing loss, the journey to achieving spoken language can also be very hard. The Auditory-Verbal Programme requires a high degree of commitment from the parents and, with busy lives, this can bring a lot of stress.
As a result The Hearing House offers a Family Support and Service Coordinator. The Family Support and Service Coordinator is the first point of contact that the family will have with The Hearing House when they are referred. From this point the Family Support and Service Coordinator will provide support and guidance to the family. This includes support at meetings with other professionals, home visits, regular contact and Parent 2 Parent meetings. The parents also contribute to and edit The Hearing House Chatterbox newsletter, which allows parents to learn from each others experiences.
Parent 2 Parent
Parent 2 Parent Group is a forum for parents to meet with each other in an informal setting to share stories, experiences and offer support to each other. Hearing House Parent to Parent Group meets each month, either on a Friday morning or a Wednesday evening, to discuss a particular topic with each other and a guest speaker. The evening events are open to grandparents and other family members and caregivers. For more information see this year’s calendar.
Chatterbox
